Former California Assembly Member Tom Ammiano Urges Democrats to Pack Supreme Court

Statement Seen as Tip of the Iceberg of Growing Democratic Support for Court Packing

(San Francisco, CA) Former California State Assembly Member Tom Ammiano has issued a statement urging Democrats to pack the Supreme Court after they return to power. According to Ammiano:

“As the next presidential campaign swings into high gear, Democrats will continue to propose bold and badly needed new plans including universal health care, a strong federal minimum wage, a Green New Deal, real gun control, and more. But these changes likely will not endure, even if Democrats enact them into law, because the extremist and cynical Kavanaugh Court will dismantle them, just like the Voting Rights Act. After Democrats sweep back into power, they need to eliminate the filibuster so as to be able to enact bold progressive laws, and they need to pack the Supreme Court to ensure that those laws endure.”

Ammiano served in the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2014, and is seen as one of the most effective progressive legislators in the state’s history.

Aaron Belkin, director of the 1/20/2021 Project, said that “Former Assembly Member Ammiano represent the tip of the iceberg of current and former elected officials who will endorse court packing as Democrats come to realize that the Kavanaugh Court will not tolerate the revitalization of democracy.”

Other elected officials who have endorsed court packing include Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Congressman Rho Khanna. In response to a questioner at an October, 2018 campaign event who asked what Democrats should do if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and made the President “above the rule of law,” Ocasio-Cortez said that “I think that we take back the House, we take back the Senate, we take back the Presidency and we pack the Supreme Court of the United States of America.”

In an October 6 tweet following the U.S. vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Representative Khanna said, “After today, does anyone doubt that reforming the Court is a functional imperative for the 21st century: 1. Justices shld be limited to an 18 year term” then serve on court of appeals. 2. Expand Court to 14 so can consider more than 80 cases a year!
